What is a PCOD ?
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It occurs when the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of male hormones (androgens), which can disrupt the regular release of eggs during ovulation. As a result, small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) can form on the ovaries, which may lead to irregular periods, infertility, and other health issues.
Common symptoms of PCOD include irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), acne, weight gain, and thinning hair. Women with PCOD may also have difficulty getting pregnant due to the absence of regular ovulation.
The exact cause of PCOD is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment typically involves managing symptoms through lifestyle changes, medication, and hormone therapy. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help women manage the condition and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
